Mostly, yes, and the reason is business class. As business seats gained doors, direct aisle access and proper beds, the argument for a separate cabin above them thinned. American is retiring international first as its new suites arrive. Many airlines quietly removed first from new aircraft orders years ago. What remains is concentrated in a few carriers that treat it as a flagship: Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Lufthansa's new Allegris first, Air France La Première, and a handful of others.
If the product is a genuine step up, a closed room, dining on demand, ground service that walks you past the terminal, and the price is within reach of the business fare on the same flight, it can be worth it on very long flights. Emirates and Singapore in particular price first within sight of business often enough that it is worth checking both. That is why our search offers First as its own cabin option rather than folding it into business.
Search both cabins on any route served by the flagship carriers. If first is less than about forty percent above business for a flight over ten hours, it deserves a serious look. If it is double, the extra money usually buys more when spent on the ground.
